Session Abstract:

Conventional wisdom suggests that large corporations are not capable of innovating, and instead have adopted a tactic of acquiring smaller companies in order to grow. Contrary to that notion, some large organizations have developed innovation initiatives with an eye toward creating new technologies and innovative products internally. During this session, presenters with connections to several such organizations will attempt to dispel conventional wisdom as myth by sharing some of their strategies and successes.


Session Organizer Bios:

Joseph Hale, Director, Innovation Fellows Program, Earl E. Bakken Medical Devices Center, University of Minnesota
Dr. Hale completed his PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of Iowa with a focus on orthopaedic biomechanics. He is an alumnus of the Medical Devices Innovation Fellows Program at the University of Minnesota and currently serves as the program's Director. He also serves as a faculty member for the Technological Leadership Institute master’s program in Medical Device Innovation.


Speaker Bios:

LotanCristin Moran, Vice President Growth Science, 3M
Dr. Cristin Moran is Vice President of Growth Science, a company that partners with a select few large companies using data science and predictive analytics to help innovators risk manage new product launches, acquisitions, strategic growth initiatives and venture capital. Cristin was formerly leading Front End Innovation within 3M Healthcare.

 

 

LotanDakota Crow, VP Innovation & Intrepreneur-In-Residence, U.S. Bank
Dakota's is a Vice President of Innovation & Innovator-In-Residence at U.S. Bank, as well as the Co-Founder of the Minnovation Collective, a regional group of diverse corporate innovators and allies. Dakota was formerly a Director of Innovation & Entrepreneur-In-Residence at Optum/UHG, where he spent four years working on health and wellness innovation.

 

 

MurrayBill Murray, CEO, CrossCourt Group
Bill is CEO of CrossCourt Group, a leader in Life Science Innovation Advisory. Previously, Bill was CEO of MDIC, where he built the organization to be a leading voice on the benefits of U.S. patient access to high quality safe and effective medical technology. Prior to MDIC, he held senior leadership positions within industry. Bill speaks regularly on issues important to the ecosystem. Bill currently serves on the boards of Sonex Health and Nortech Systems and is an AIMBE Fellow.

"Corporate Innovation Uncovered"
All organizations want to be innovative, but are they truly setup for making innovation happen? This session will explore Corporate Innovation from a top-down and bottom-up approach. It will also touch on the subtle similarities and vast differences between small startups and large corporate giants.

"Medtech Innovation: The Big Picture"
This presentation will share an ecosystem wide perspective on medtech innovation from traditional product innovation to innovations in new business models. Key emerging trends will also be discussed.
