Session Organizer Bios:

Elizabeth Hsiao-Wecksler, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign
Elizabeth Hsiao-Wecksler is a Professor, Willett Faculty Scholar, and Associate Head of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Her research is focused on investigating and improving movement control and function through two main areas: assistive device development and locomotion biomechanics. To address these areas, we have been involved in the development of pneumatically powered orthotic devices and multi-speed wheel systems for manual wheelchairs. She is also a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Andrew Hansen, Minneapolis VA Health Care System
Andrew Hansen is the Director of the Minneapolis Adaptive Design & Engineering (MADE) Program at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. He is also an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Minnesota. His research interests include development of rehabilitation technologies, including prostheses, wheelchairs, and exercise equipment.

Phil Voglewede, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Marquette University
Dr. Philip A. Voglewede is the associate chair and an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the OPUS College of Engineering at Marquette University. Before joining Marquette, Dr. Voglewede was an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina and worked for Whirlpool Corporation in a variety of engineering roles.

Gary Goldish, EC & R Director, Minneapolis VA Health Care System
Dr. Goldish has more than 30 years of clinical experience as a rehabilitation physician at the Minneapolis VA and he has been board certified in spinal cord injury medicine since 1999. He has always sought to improve the quality of life of the veterans under his care, by refusing to accept the status quo and by seeking creative solutions to the everyday problems that prevent them from achieving their goals. He spent over 10 years planning and developing the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) Center at the Minneapolis VA, which now serves the rehabilitation and lifelong care needs of SCI/D patients from across the Midwest Region. He is currently the Director of the Extended Care and Rehabilitation Patient Service Line, Spinal Cord Injury Fellowship Director for the University of Minnesota and Medical Director of the Minneapolis VA Adaptive Design and Engineering (MADE) Program. Dr. Goldish has a passion for research and has been involved i n several studies which have aimed to improve health care outcomes for spinal cord injury veterans. He is also an inventor and has several patents covering a wide range of assistive technology devices.

Christine Olney, Minneapolis VA Health Care System
Dr. Christine Olney, PhD, RN is a nurse scientist with the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her research focus is prevention of pressure injury, primarily focused on Veterans with spinal cord injury. Dr. Olney works collaboratively with the Minneapolis Adaptive Design & Engineering (MADE) Program. This cohesive team of clinicians (MDs, OTs, PTs, and Nurses), engineers and specialists design, develop, and test adaptive devices for Veterans. Her current projects include: development and testing of 1) a supine arm ergometer for patients who are bed ridden, 2) a skin self- screening tool for persons with spinal cord injury, 3) trunk control system for persons who lack trunk control, and 4) a personal use seating pressure measurement system for persons with spinal cord injury.

"EMG Controlled Trans-Tibial Prostheses"
This presentation overviews research at Marquette University to develop a dynamic myoelectric controlled active lower extremity prosthesis that uses the natural patterns of residual limb EMG activity to continuously predict the user’s intended limb kinematics across mobility tasks (level walking at different speeds, incline/decline, stair ascent/descent), during their transitions (including to/from stance), and in response to unexpected environmental perturbations (obstacles, unstable terrain, etc.).

"Development and Testing of a Supine Arm Exercise System for Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries"
Persons with spinal cord injuries are often placed on mobility restrictions when healing a pressure ulcer. Reduced physical activity leads to significant deconditioning during the weeks and months spent in the hospital. Exercise has many beneficial physiological and psychological effects. During bed rest, there are few options for exercise, potentially contributing to morbidity. We will describe the development of a supine ergometer for use during extended periods of bed rest as well as our results to date from the first 20 participants in our clinical testing. The clinical testing provided ongoing feedback to refine our prototype and to provide pilot data for a future randomized control trial.
