Paul A. Iaizzo, PhD, Professor, Conference Co-Chair, Surgery Department, Associate Director for IEM, University of Minnesota
Dr. Paul Iaizzo joined the University of Minnesota in 1990, and is currently a Professor of Surgery, Integrative Biology and Physiology, and the Carlson School of Management. He teaches in numerous courses and is on the graduate faculties in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physiology, and Neuroscience. His main research focus is translational systems physiology, and his research group has developed a unique isolated working large mammalian heart model: see http://www.vhlab.umn.edu/atlas/. Other research interests include cardiac pacing, skeletal muscle pathophysiology (malignant hyperthermia), thermoregulation, black bear hibernation, wound healing, and spine biomechanics. In 2002, Paul Iaizzo
was awarded as a Distinguished University Teaching Professor for graduate studies. He is also the Director for Education of the Lillehei Heart Institute and an Associate Director of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine.

David G. Benditt, MD, FACC, FRCP(C), FHRS, FESC
David G. Benditt, MD, FACC, FRCPC, FHRS, FESC was born in Winnipeg, Canada, received a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering and an MD degree from the University of Manitoba. Following postgraduate training in Internal Medicine he completed a cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Thereafter, he joined the faculty of the Cardiovascular Division in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Benditt is currently Professor of Medicine and Co-director of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. His principal research interests are in the evaluation of fainting spells and related autonomic disturbances. His clinical interests include evaluation and management of cardiac arrhythmias (including ablation) and treatment of syncope.
Dr. Benditt has been an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association, President of both the American Heart Association-Minnesota Affiliate and the North American Society for Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE, now the Heart Rhythm Society). He was been awarded the Pioneer in Pacing and Electrophysiology Award of the Heart Rhythm Society in 2007, and the Outstanding Clinician Award at the University of Minnesota in 2010.

Dr. Yoshiyuki Taenaka graduated from the Osaka University Medical School, Osaka, Japan in 1976 receiving his MD, passed his National Examination of Medicine in 1976, and received his PhD form Osaka University Medical School in 1991.

Dr. Yoshiyuki Taenaka has been the Professor of Surgery and the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan for the past 13 years and since 2010 he has added Director of the Research and Development Initiative Center (NCVC) and the Deputy Director of the Research Institute (NCVC). He is a Professional Society Member of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the Japanese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, a Council Member of the Japanese Society for Artificial Organs, and is a Past-President of the International Federation for Artificial Organs and the International Society for Rotary Blood Pump. Dr. Yoshiyuki is the Author or Co-Author of more than 180 scientific papers written in English.

Current status of the research and development of cardiovascular devices which include 1. Durable and antithrombogenic ECMO system with newly developed centrifugal pump and oxygenator, 2. Axial blood pump system for long-term ventricular assist, 3. Microporous covered stents for the treatment of both cerebral aneurysms and coronary stenosis, 4. In-body tissue-engineered completely autologous aortic valve (BIOVALVE), will be presented in the talk.
